Sleep apnea symptoms

Sleep apnea is a very serious sleeping disorder that if ignored can lead to serious health problems. It’s very common and is marked by shallow breathing during sleep, gasping for air, and even the total cessation of breathing all together. It’s important to know the signs and symptoms of this disorder so your physician is better able to diagnose the problem and treat it effectively.
The most common symptom of sleep apnea is loud and consistent snoring followed by gasping or snorting for air. The repeated gasping for air causes the normal sleep rhythm to be disrupted, breaking the cycle of restorative sleep. Patients often complain of being tired all the time while their partners complain of loud snoring. Because the individual is unable to breathe properly while sleeping the quality of sleep greatly diminishes leading to hypersomnia, or extreme fatigue during the day, morning headaches, dry/sore throat, and issues with memory. A lack of sleep itself brings about several other issues including irritability or moodiness, difficulty concentrating, and a general lack of interest in everyday things.
Because many of these symptoms are commonplace it can be difficult for a physician to diagnose sleep apnea during a regular doctor visit. If you suspect that you have sleep apnea it’s recommended that you obtain a referral from your doctor and make an appointment at a sleep disorder clinic for evaluation. They will be able to monitor you closely throughout the night and diagnose whether or not you’re suffering from sleep apnea.
Men are more likely than women to suffer from sleep apnea as are those who are overweight, and over the age of 65. Smokers may also be more likely to be diagnosed with the disorder and those who are related to someone who suffers from it (heredity factor).
The most commonly used treatment for sleep apnea features a device called a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. The machine pumps air continuously through a mask worn by the patient to provide consistent airflow during sleep. This eliminates the gasping for breath by allowing the patient access to total airflow during the entire sleep cycle.
More and more studies are showing that the lack of restorative sleep can have serious deleterious health effects including weight gain and all that is associated with it (high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, etc.). Not to mention the everyday bother of being tired all the time and not being able to fully concentrate on the task at hand. Snoring isn’t just snoring but could in fact be a sign of something more serious so be sure to speak with a physician if you have any questions or concerns.

GET TO KNOW THE BASICS OF GUM DISEASE

Around 75 percent of adult Americans will develop gum disease, which makes it the leading oral health problem in the U.S and the major cause of tooth loss. Judging by how common the condition is, more people need to be aware of basic information about gum disease, its causes, symptoms and treatments.
People develop mild gum disease first, which is known as gingivitis. This stage of the condition is not particularly serious and you can reverse the condition reasonably easily without suffering long-term consequences for your oral health. If this is allowed to develop and you do not seek out appropriate treatment, then it will worsen and become periodontitis.
Periodontitis is altogether much more serious and can lead to long-term oral health problems such as loss of teeth as well as affect your overall health and wellbeing.

What Is Gum Disease?

Simply put, gum disease is an oral condition that affects the gum tissue, teeth and even bones around the mouth. It is chiefly a bacterial infection that affects the gum tissue and destroys it to a point where it can no longer support your teeth. In the advanced stages the infection can spread into the bone and throughout other parts of your body. As the disease advances you may experience one or all of these conditions:
·         Bone damage
·         Loss of bone
·         Loose teeth
·         Loss of teeth

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease is always caused by bacteria. The bacteria come from the food that you eat every day and can interact with saliva in your mouth to also cause plaque and tartar build-up, which can worsen the condition.
Bacteria
Bacteria in your mouth irritate and damage the gums. Bacteria grow and multiply very quickly, which means that you need to remove it by brushing, flossing and using a mouthwash every day.
Poor Oral Hygiene
If you do not remove the bacteria in your mouth by following a good daily oral hygiene routine, then you are going to develop gum disease. Part of good dental care should also include a visit to your dentist every six months for a check-up and deep clean.

Symptoms Of Gum Disease To Look Out For:

·         Receding gums resulting in teeth appearing longer
·         Constant bleeding, especially during brushing
·         Halitosis, which is chronic bad breath
·         Loose teeth
·         Pain
If you notice any of the above symptoms, you should immediately visit your dentist for a diagnosis and advice on how to treat the condition.

Differences between a strain and a sprain

Strains and sprains are simple to confuse but are, in fact, two completely different injuries. It’s important to know the difference between the two in order to seek proper medical care. The following article highlights the main differences between a strain and a sprain but, as always, in the event of an injury seek immediate medical attention.
Strains, or pulled muscles, are injuries related to muscle tissue and tendons. Muscles and tendons attach to bones and aid in movement. A strain occurs when the tissue is either overused or used improperly. This can occur during strenuous activity (overuse) and may be the result of poor flexibility and improper warm-up prior to exercise. Bruises and swelling typically follow and the best treatment option is the RICE method of rest, ice, compression, and elevation. This will reduce both the pain and swelling of the strain. It’s recommended that you stay off the muscle long enough to allow it to heal properly before returning to exercise.
Sprains, on the other hand, affect the ligaments and joints. Ligaments attach bones to joints and when stretched or torn will result in a sprain. This typically occurs because of an unnatural and/or sudden movement such as a quick stop or turn. When people complain of “rolling their ankles” that could be categorized as a sprain. The joints most affected by sprains are the ankles.
There are three different degrees of sprains; first, second and third. A first degree sprain occurs when the ligament is stretched but not severed or torn resulting in mild pain. Second degree sprains are characterized by a partial tear in the ligament and result in mild to moderate pain, swelling, and joint instability. A third degree sprain is the most severe and occurs when the ligament is torn completely resulting in moderate to severe pain, swelling and almost total joint instability.
The treatment option for a sprain is not unlike that of a strain. Whether or not to seek medical treatment depends on the severity of the injury. If swelling, pain and instability are moderate to severe you should seek immediate medical attention. However, if the ligament is stretched but not torn, the RICE method of rest, ice, compression, and elevation should aid in healing.
